INTERNSHIP
PARA.MAR Dance Theatre
In the summer and fall of 2021 I got the privilege to work as an intern for PARA.MAR Dance Theatre here in Chicago. This dance company is in its first few years and is emerging some very important works and messages throughout Chicago. I got the opportunity to work with them as the company was just starting out so I learned a lot about what it takes to put a company together like this as well as throw shows and events like they did.
Rehearsal And Performance
For my first time taking this course I got the privilege of being Deborah Goodman's rehearsal assistant for Doris Humphreys Water Study. I was really lucky to be a part of the process because I got to experience having a guest artist come in and set the piece on the dancers and i got to watch first hand Deb's extraordinary creative process. The second time I took this course I was casted in the staging of Anna Sokolow's Rooms with the director from the Sokolow company. This experience was unlike and other I had experienced and will cherish the moments I got to learn form these amazing artists. The third time I took this class I was casted in Sandra Kaufmann's Chapters in the Revolution, Amy Wilkinson's Aphrodite at the Violet Hour and the staging of Martha Graham's Sketches from Chronicle staged by Blakeley White-McGuire. These experiences were especially fruitful as I got the experience to work with many different choreographers as well as our guest artist Blakeley. Getting to dance and be an understudy for these pieces was extremely beneficial in building my skills and understanding of how to work with choreographers and conduct myself in a professional way.
Dance Pedagogy
This semester I have begun taking dance Pedagogy and have learned so much in these few weeks of classes. We are getting exposed to different ways of approaching dance teaching which has been really informative to explore and figure out how I teach and how IÂ am comfortable teaching a class. We have also gotten the opportunity to listen to a few guest speakers so far and have gotten to listen to their experiences in teaching dance and how they approach it with their own classes, companies and universities.
DANCE COMPOSITION
Original Choreography
In this class I got the change to explore and create an original work on dancers here ay Loyola. Being that I took this class during the year we were entirely online I was faced with making a dance film instead of a staged work. This came with other challenges but also more skills to obtain and learn. I created a piece titled Melodic Memories where my dancers dove into the motivation and impact music has on their lives.
